Do you have German health insurance? Your child鈥檚 orthodontic treatment in Poland may be reimbursed!

21 May 2025

Orthodontic Treatment for Children in Poland May Be Reimbursed by German Health Insurance Funds such as AOK, BKK, DAK, or VIACTIV. Find Out How!

An increasing number of people who live permanently in Germany but have family in Poland are considering orthodontic treatment for their children on the Polish side of the border. The reasons? High quality of services, competitive prices, and the possibility of reimbursement by German health insurance funds such as AOK, BKK, DAK, or VIACTIV.

But how does this process work in practice?

What does orthodontic treatment involve?

Orthodontic treatment is the process of correcting malocclusions and improper positioning of teeth. It may encompass various stages—from early intervention in children to advanced therapies in adults. The most commonly used appliances are fixed or removable braces, aimed at improving both the aesthetics and function of the bite. Orthodontic treatment not only enhances the appearance of the smile but also prevents more serious health problems in the future—such as headaches, temporomandibular joint disorders, or speech impediments.

I am insured in Germany, and my child is planning orthodontic treatment in Poland — what next?

This is a question increasingly asked by parents whose children—although living or studying in Poland—are covered by German health insurance. The good news: orthodontic treatment in Poland can be reimbursed by German health insurance funds provided that certain formal and medical conditions are met.

Rules for reimbursement of orthodontic treatment in the German insurance system

In Germany, reimbursement for orthodontics is based on clearly defined criteria.

Key elements include:

  • KIG (Kieferorthopädische Indikationsgruppen) – Orthodontic indication groups

  • Reimbursement is granted only for malocclusions classified as KIG 3, KIG 4, or KIG 5—that is, moderate to severe cases. The defect is assessed by an orthodontist, and the diagnosis must be included in the treatment plan.

Type of treatment

In the application, it is necessary to specify whether it is:

  • a new treatment plan,

  • its modification (Therapieänderung),

  • an extension of treatment (Verlängerungsantrag),

or continuation following a change of orthodontist or health insurance fund.

Medical documentation

The treatment plan must include detailed information such as:

  • diagnosis,

  • medical history (Anamnese),

  • appliances used (verwendete Geräte),

  • expected duration of treatment and its cost (including materials and laboratory fees),

  • application number (Antragsnummer) and processing identification (Verarbeitungskennzeichen).

Will the German health insurance cover an orthodontic appliance privately applied in Poland?

Yes—but only if the treatment in Poland is approved as “equivalent” to German medical standards. This means the Polish treatment plan must be converted in accordance with the guidelines of German health insurance funds (including according to BEMA – Bundesmantelvertrag Zahnärzte).

This requires specialist knowledge and experience—and this is where our team comes in.
